St. Helen

In the 1880s, Saint Helen was home to one of Michigan’s largest lumber mills, producing over one billion feet of lumber. Foundations and other logging era artifacts can still be found in the area. The “Old Stone School’, built by the WPA in the late 1930s, is located near Saint Helen’s Veterans Memorial. Actor Charlton Heston spent the first ten years of his life in Saint Helen while his father worked at the local sawmill, and in later years vacationed there with his family at their hunting lodge and property on Russell Lake just west of town.

Saint Helen is home to Lake St. Helen and surrounding area. The lake is an all-sports lake, with State Forests and unspoiled wilderness that covers approximately 13 miles of the 18 miles of shoreline. Whether you are a hiker, kayaker, boater, fisherman, hunter, winter snowmobiler or trail rider, golfer, there are activities available to all of you in St. Helen.

There is a public boat launch on airport road that also includes a beach, an ADA universal fishing pier and kayak/canoe launch. Next to the launch is Cove Park which also has a beach, marina, benches, playground, pavilion all for the family entertainment.

Within St. Helen we have many interesting attractions.  Our Veterans Memorial with the Battlefield Cross is a favorite. The memorial is dedicated to honoring past and current military personnel. Bricks are purchased to be put in place at the memorial to represent  military service, and the bricks can be purchased by anyone.

There is a community garden that houses raised beds for growing, an orchard, a wildflower butterfly garden, walking paths, disc golf and opening in 2025 a farmers market pavilion and restrooms.

We have a lodge (Hubbard’s Lodge-info found on Facebook) with five cabins, a motel (Trails End-info found on Facebook) and opening in May 2025 the Minnow Camp Resort(info found on Facebook), they will be five cabins each sleeping 4 with private bathrooms. There also is a township owned campground, both electric and rustic sites.

This campground is located on Airport Road as part of the township park and across the road from a trailhead (found at www.richfieldtownship.org). The township park consists of a pavilion, bathrooms, playground, baseball diamonds and more.

Our trail system spans over 200 miles of well-marked and groomed trails, running through the State Forests in the area. The St. Helen trail area is known for its Saint Helen Motorsports Area with its challenging “Rock Climb” and “Sand Bowl”

Some of the annual events held in St. Helen are:

The Bluegill Festival (held at the township park)

Many make a day of it and reserve campsites (which is adjacent to the airport where the fireworks are sent up. There are vendors, food and other things to keep you busy until the big event.

There is a craft for the kids, they can leave a card for Santa to get a letter, cocoa and cookies. Lots of fun!

This is just a few of the many activities and events we hold throughout the year in St. Helen.
